The Institut für Mittelstandsforschung (IfM) Bonn was established in 1957 as a foundation of private law. Founders are the Federal Republic of Germany and the Federal State of North Rhine-Westphalia. IfM Bonn has 44 employees, thereof 24 researchers.

The institute analyses the status-quo, the development and the problems of small and medium-sized enterprises, develops recommendations for SME policies and disseminates its research results to the general public. The in-stitute also conducts commissioned research.

By adopting an applied research approach, IfM Bonn focuses its research activities on four main areas: (1) SME-Statistics and Economic Monitoring, (2) Mittelstand (SMEs), Society and Government, (3) Lifecycle of Mittelstand Companies, (4) Strategic Management.
