The Austrian Institute for SME Research was founded in 1952 and is specialised in social and economic research with focus on small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). It is an independent, private, non-profit association with the aim to prepare and supply information and data to facilitate decision-making for enterprises and their advisors, for institutions responsible for economic policy and business promotion as well as for universities, colleges of higher education and other research institutions. The Austrian Institute for SME Research with about 30 staff members is the largest Austrian research organisation which focuses on SMEs and has more than fifty years of continuous experience. The Institute maintains regular contacts with governmental organisations and business associations at national and international (mainly European) level and co-operates closely with research institutions in almost all European countries and a variety of international organisations.
